In order to answer AOI specific concerns surrounding impaired ecological processes and possible ecological state shifts we inform the interpretation of application results. Our standard requires set and repeatable analytical approaches related to analyses outside of Earth Engine, e.g., measurable rangeland AOI specific ecosystem structure and function impacts under variable ungulate utilization levels. Our carefully planned research designs can be used to detect biologically relevant temporal differences in vegetation cover-types and ungulate fitness histories, where available. Analysis of primary productivity (above ground vegetation) variances and differences in means at set alphas and p-values can lead to robust comparisons between rangelands over time. Survivingenious LLC's AOI specific sampling designs for vegetative community composition and associated C:N ratios can lead to strong inference regarding landscape ecological carrying capacity.
These among other services help identify ecological state shifts, if present, and provide statistically defensible, scientifically backed information to decision makers who are working toward our common goals of ecological conservation and restoration. Together our efforts can bolster ungulate fitness, such as with bison (Bison bison), by creating healthy feedback loops in terms of ecosystem structure and function. Through informed management decisions based on measurable and repeatable results we together as systems ecologists (meaning you too) can help balance landscape floral and faunal diversity.
Following are Survivingenious LLC's current works in progress:
Development of ungulate intake per species' age groups as the crude protein nutritional requirement divided by sum total crude protein content of preferred forage types per fraction of cover. Stable application ECCwBD 1.0.1.0 released 2021/03/20 includes user input options for each of these variables. Instructions updated accordingly.
Development of various branched algorithmic statistical summarization functionalities & image-based probability modeling options. We have included sampling and save options for a sample of every 500m pixel within AOIs < 5000 pixels and an upload option for user specified sample points of up to 5000 pixels within AOIs of any size. Stable application ECCwBD 1.1.1.2 released 2021/12/16 includes these sampling options for 29 environmental variables including the following: mean Greenup and senescence 2001-2018, growing season productivity with prior winter conditions, elevation and coordinates.
Fine scale ground imagery integration to enhance the MODIS & ungulate offtake estimates via ground verification with actual vegetation density measurements collected via random sampling or an agreed upon sampling design per habitat for specific ungulates.
Adjustment of winter forage availability estimates via inclusion of winter foraging limitation influences on forage availability and access. Coefficient estimates are derived from an updated generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) to estimate ungulate browsing likelihood in response to spatiotemporal variation in biotic and abiotic winter covariates partitioned into random effect groups (Belile Thesis). We have integrated influences of winter abiotic and biotic covariates on forage access and availability using strong inference derived from GLMM coefficients for winter snow depth and level two soil temperature within a random effect grouping designation expressed per spatiotemporal variability in season PsnNet less estimated total ungulate offtake (Muñoz 2019). Application of GLMM coefficients to adjust estimated average AOI forage availability during January through March shows promising preliminary results. This work is in progress and is associated with Belile Thesis © Copyright 2016 Donald L. Belile Jr. and The eccwbd application © Copyright 2020 Survivingenious LLC.
ECCwBD and ECCwBD Farmer stable applications now includes 250m resolution soil organic carbon content at 10cm depth for the continental U.S. (Hengl and Wheeler 2018).
Estimating Carrying Capacity is embedded in our <> R Shiny Application for ECCwBD analyses. Earth Engine ECCwBD 1.2.2.0 forage and ungulate inputs are deprecated and moved to R Shiny tab 'Carrying Capacity Estimation'. Inputs for ungulate offtake, forage type nutritional quality/requirements are streamlined directly into R. Data selection within user defined AOI generates 500m samples of 29 variables. Once algorithm completes click 'View Data' and download as a CSV file, which is preformatted for upload in 'Data upload' tab. Once uploaded the placeholder data (Northern Range within Yellowstone National Park) is updated. Predict current year season MODIS PsnNet by first performing exploratory data analysis to identify significant variables and their combinations within a fitted generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). Using prior year's predictor variables, which end in 'x' for designation, we can confirm prediction with regression analysis of actual available season PsnNet over predicted season PsnNet. We are now currently working on calculating intersected area to reduce 500m edge effects. We are also working on reactive column binding of predicted season PsnNet with input data for within R responsive outputs.
ECCwBD_Farmer 1.1.0.1 is now also embedded in our <> R Shiny EE App for ECCwBD analyses.
ECCwBD 1.2.3.0 results panel includes season PsnNet and estimated ungulate offtake summary statistics based on all pixels within AOI (contingent on Earth Engine calculation time-out. Button "Within Season Carrying Capacity" opens a new panel with results based on estimated offtake between Greenup (start) date and senescence (end) date. Updated 02/01/2022. Included are 41 environmental predictor variables; mean MODIS cycle 1 Greenup and senescence 2001-2018, winter mean MODIS leaf area index, fraction of photosynthetically active radiation, snow cover and albedo from January 1st through Greenup, OpenLandMap 250m soil organic carbon content, CHIRPS 5566m winter and growing season total precipitation, NLCD 30m national land cover data, USGS 10m national elevation, ALOS 30m global elevation data, and ERA5 11.1km level 2 winter mean soil temperature and snow depth, and ERA5 11.1km mean volumetric soil water content from January 1st through Greenup and for Greenup through senescence. (Hall et al. 2016, Funk et al. 2015, LP DAAC, Muñoz 2019, Tomislav and Wheeler 2018, USGS, please see NOTICE). Also available are EE reduced 500m elevation along with elevation derived slope and cosine aspect to account for landscape variation at the MODIS scale.
